European Union Journalists Visit the CLP

Bangladesh is hosting the Global Climate Change Alliance Conference on 30-31 May with the organisation being shared by the Ministry of Environment and Forests and the European Union delegation in Dhaka. Bangladesh is often seen as a nation in the frontline of climate change risk and thus the conference has inspired journalists from across Europe to attend the conference.

As part of their fact-finding, the journalists are being offered the opportunity to meet with activities, programmes and projects that work to either directly counteract climate change or to help populations build resilience against the possible impacts. For the latter reason, the European Union requested that the CLP host a group of a dozen journalists from many European countries (Spain, Poland, France, Germany, Denmark, Hungary, Portugal and the UK) and organise a visit to our activities in Sirajganj. The visit took place on Friday 28 May 2010.

The visit was led by our partners MMS and the group visited completed CLP activities in the village of Boalkandi in the Sodia Chandpur Union of Chowhali.

French Radio (RFI) getting an exclusive interview …

All three CLP staff present on the trip were interviewed with particular interest shown by the journalists of the CLP credentials for helping to build the resilience of the poorest households to the future impacts of climate change. Mahbub Alam, Rafique Islam and Malcolm Marks are all likely to make it onto European TV and radio over the coming weeks.

For more information on how the Chars Livelihoods Programme is building the climate resilience of the poorest families on the chars, see this brief by CLP’s Team Leader Dr. Malcolm Marks.
