Corporate Responsibility helps the CLP help the Poor
(Stepping up to the line and ringing the changes)

The Chars Livelihoods Programme is well known as a programme that seeks to help the poorest members of island char society to escape the grip of abject poverty. To date, the CLP has been working with generous funding from the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and the Government of Bangladesh. However, the CLP is pleased to announce that two internationally renowned private organisations are also helping the poor of the chars by the provision of corporate assistance.

The first to “step-up to the line” (pun intended) was Bata Shoe Co. ( Bangladesh ) who generously gave 3,000 pairs of flip-flops and provided a 20% discount on 12,000 more pairs.

As a result, CLP has been able to provide 7,500 extreme poor families with two pairs of flip-flops for use in their newly constructed latrines. Wearing flip-flops in the latrine is one method being promoted by CLP to improve hygiene and reduce the incidence of disease. Special thanks to Kym Bradley (of Bata) who provided CLP with this opportunity.

Following close behind Bata and “ringing the changes” for CLP health workers (Char Shwastha Karmi or CSK) and Paramedics is Grameenphone Ltd. who provided the CLP with 392 mobile telephones at a much reduced corporate rate. The phones allow the CSK and paramedics, based on remote island chars, to rapidly telephone specialist doctors from the CLP’s health programme. Not only can the doctors be contacted day and night for emergency consultations but they can provide rapid diagnoses of more complex ailments. Thanks to Ishtiaque Hossain Chowdhury of the Commercial Division of Grameenphone.
